Phase 1 – Lockdown

In this phase, the general public are essentially under a stay-at-home order – with a limited number of acceptable reasons to leave the house.

This is the most restrictive phase of the lockdown.  It is the most challenging for fitness and well-being facilities, and the most stressful – for owners, employees, and members.

During phase-1 your options for delivering training to your members is restricted to on-demand video training, and live training. Your members are allowed a limited daily period of exercise outside, and this is something you should include in your training plan for them during this time.

An obvious concern for facility owners experiencing such restrictions is the ability to continue to bring in revenue, and to cover costs. The industry has a long-standing tendency to undersell itself. Respected trainers suddenly giving their workouts away for free on YouTube might seem magnanimous. It may help their personal profile and help them feel like they’re contributing to society but, unfortunately, it undermines the value of the industry’s offering.

Try to resist the urge to panic and slash your prices to ridiculous lows. If you typically offer an in-person small group session at £30 per hour, would it really only be worth £20 a month when delivered over video? You are essentially delivering a comparable level of care and training, albeit without the use of your equipment and facilities. Many facilities are finding they are able to continue with their regular membership fees during this time.

Another option is to pause memberships, and implement an ‘online training’ membership charged at an appropriate level. Following lockdown, your members return to their regular memberships – but also continue to include video on-demand workouts in your offering.

The industry has changed, and the future of gyms and fitness facilities is a fusion/hybrid of in-person and online training.

Extended lockdown is not good for an individual’s mental health – particularly if they live on their own, or are isolated. Your offering should include an increased well-being element, on top of the training regime. Use the tools within Quoox to check-in with your members; check on their well-being; and give them tasks and content to help them take their mind off their lockdown anxieties.

It is equally important to take care of your own mental health and state-of-mind. This is an extremely stressful time for a business owner. Remind yourself that the current situation is a ‘blip’, and that the industry will recover. People need to train, and that need won’t go away. Take up any of the relevant schemes offered by the government, and review & control your outgoings. Many suppliers are offering discounts, payment holidays and other help.

Use this time to your advantage. Step back and review your business, its strengths and its weaknesses. Now is a great time to streamline and improve your processes. Which parts of the business make you money, and which less so? Are you emphasising what makes you different to Bob’s gym down the road? Do you really need so many spreadsheets? Are your systems working for you, or just costing money whilst simultaneously holding you back?

During the highly restrictive phase-1 lockdown, here are some of the ways that you can use Quoox to benefit your business and your members:

  • Deliver on-demand video workouts via the Quoox app. Learn how
  • Provide live video sessions via Zoom, WebEx, YouTube Live or similar. Simplify your Zoom setup by integrating Quoox with Zoom. Learn how
  • Keep communicating with your members on a regular basis. Make sure you show them that you care, and respond to their feedback promptly. You can send out ad hoc messages; scheduled messages; or use the XRcize Program reach-outs to create a member nurturing program.
  • Use Quoox‘s Campaign functionality to keep promoting your business. There are people stuck at home looking for training solutions at this time. You also want your brand to be at the forefront of people’s minds come the “bounce-back”, when they start looking for gym to sign-up to. Lockdown and lack of exercise is causing many to put on weight which, in turn, makes them unhappy and in need of your support.
  • Send your members content via the Quoox app. These could be our pre-written, co-branded recipes and cookbooks, or any collateral you wish to share via the Quoox Library. We are adding additional content of benefit to your members during lockdown, and free for you to share with your members (and branded as your own).
  • Encourage your members to send in pictures of their food via the app, and provide feedback.
  • Have your members link their Fitbit® and Myzone® devices to their Quoox account, so both you and they can see their stats in the Quoox app.
  • Track which members are doing your on-demand workouts via the XRcize Hub, and comment to motivate them.
  • Ensure that you keep an eye on the member drop-off widget. Identify and reach out to any members who seem not to be training, or not attending online sessions. They may be struggling, and in need of a few kind words.
  • Consider using the video capability of XRcize sessions to send some “pieces to camera” from you to your members. This doesn’t have to be about training, but could be a broader, friendly message of support. It helps for members to see your face, and a video is much stronger than a blog or email. Show them that you genuinely care, and it’s not just marketing spiel you throw out during sign-up.
  • Now is a great time to grow your business, and to position it for the bounce back. Why not sell online training packages no-touch using Campaigns? You have been creating all the videos, so why not do more with it? Show your members and prospects that you have not been idle during shutdown, and make the most of the tools that Quoox gives you to further enhance your amazing training. Remember – an effective fitness regime extends well beyond the 2-3 hours your members are at your facility each week.
